Companion animals

Australia has one of the world’s highest levels of pet ownership. Recognising the growing importance of the companion animal business to our members, Animal Health Alliance (Australia) Ltd is focusing more on the companion animal business. To that end, the Alliance is actively participating in the Australian Companion Animal Council (ACAC) to promote the benefits of socially responsible companion animal ownership.

The Alliance was pleased to assist ACAC with the funding of the 7th Edition (2010) of the Contribution of the Pet Care Industry to the Australian Economy.  This latest report shows that pet ownership contributed $6.02 billion to the Australian economy in 2009 and that the continuing high rates of pet ownership in Australia reflect the importance pets have in the lives of Australians.

In November 2008 the Alliance commenced an additional project with ACAC.  This project is in the form of a Sponsorship Agreement and involves the Alliance funding an Executive Officer position, employed by ACAC, for a minimum of two days per week for up to three years.

The aims of the project are to encourage pet owners to appreciate the intrinsic value of pets and so maintain health pets, address the decline in pet numbers in Australia and plan to achieve the self sufficient resources of the ACAC Executive Officer position by the 4th year of  the project.
