WormBoss

WormBoss is a resource for farmers to help them fight sheepworms.  It is a comprehensive, user-friendly online resource on managing and controlling worms in sheep.  It brings together national knowledge on sheepworms and their management to help farmers identify worms and know when and how to treat them.

WormBoss has been developed by the Australian Sheep Industry Cooperative Research Centre and Australian Wool Innovation Ltd, with input from leading parasitologists, researchers, extension officers and consultants as well as manufacturers and distributors of drenches which include members of Animal Health Alliance (Australia) Ltd.

Worms cost Australian sheep producers more than any other disease and WormBoss is a useful tool for managing worm resistance to drenches. It is an opportunity to make a real difference to sheep producers.

A highlight of the WormBoss is Ask the Boss, which advises growers how to manage worms on their property based on their region, class of sheep, drench resistance area and worm egg count.

Producers are guided through a series of questions. At the end, WormBoss gives them advice that not only tells them what to do, but tells them the underlying principles governing the advice – such as information about the prevalence and impact of worms in their area and an understanding of drench resistance.

WormBoss recommends four general management practices:

  1. Detect infestation early by monitoring worm egg counts.
  2. Do regular drench resistance tests to know what works on your property.
  3. Maximise non-chemical management strategies.
  4. If you are unsure, seek professional advice.
