Antibiotics are valuable medicines and livestock production tools. Animal Health Alliance (Australia) Ltd does not support the upfront usage of the 'Precautionary Principle' in the assessment of veterinary antibiotics for registration in Australia.
The Alliance supports Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) in conducting a science based risk analysis process in assessing veterinary antibiotics and we will continue to monitor the processes used by APVMA. In addition, the Alliance will continue to monitor the rigor of the science based assessment process used by APVMA to review existing veterinary antibiotics registered in Australia.
The Alliance is actively involved in international initiatives through VICH (International Cooperation on Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Registration of Veterinary Medicinal Products) and Codex to set transparent, harmonised standards for regulating the supply and use of antibiotics. In 2007, the Alliance participated as part of the Australian government delegation in progressing the Codex Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance initiative to define key compounds in the risk analysis process.
