Injectable Growth Promotant (IGP) products are ear implanted into cattle and designed to slowly release small quantities of hormone to replace or supplement those already in the animal to increase the efficiency of the production.
The Animal Health Alliance (Australia) Ltd supports the continued registration and use of veterinary IGPs. This support is given based on the fact that each product undergoes a science based risk assessment by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) before registration is granted.
These assessments have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of these products. The Alliance will continue to pursue the dismantling of the existing inhibitory controls on IGPs in Australia. These existing controls adversely impact on the manufacturers, suppliers and users of IGPs.
The Alliance believes that recently implemented producer industry quality assurance schemes, such as the closed production system and the National Livestock Identification Scheme, can deliver beef/offal integrity through the European Union Cattle Accreditation Scheme. As such, the existing regulations that negatively impact on manufacture and supply of IGPs in Australia should be removed and the Alliance will continue to push for this outcome.
